Symptoms of Eating Disorders
Take a look at the following symptoms or signs of Eating Disorders. These will be
helpful to determine if you or a loved one may be suffering from an eating disorder.
Anorexia Nervosa
Someone with Anorexia may have these signs:
1. Develops unusual and extremely disturbed eating habits such as moving food around the
plate, weighing everything, counting calories and skipping meals.
2. A relentless pursuit of thinness and unwillingness to maintain a normal or healthy weight, thus loses a lot of
weight.
3. Eating, food and weight control become obsessions: Talks about weight and food all the time
4. A person with anorexia typically weighs herself or himself repeatedly
5. Some people with anorexia lose weight by dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced
vomiting, or misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas.
6. Many people with anorexia have a distorted body image and intense fear of gaining weight, they see themselves as
overweight, even when they are starved.
7. Very depressed and moody
8. Gets sick quite frequently
9. Avoid eating in front of others
Bulimia Nervosa
Someone with bulimia may have these signs:
1. May be underweight, overweight, or have a normal weight.
2. Intense fear of gaining weight thus thinking about food, body shape and weight all the time
3. Binge: Frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food normally in secret
4. Purge almost immediately after binge: Make themselves vomit or use laxatives, diuretics (water pills), fasting
and/or excessive exercise to get rid of the food in their bodies.
5. Depression due to guilt and shame over the behavior and malnutrition
6. Goes to the bathroom all the time after eating (to throw up)
7. Exercise excessively
8. Swelling of the cheeks or jaw area
9. Cuts and calluses on the back of the hands and knuckles due to inducing vomiting
10. Tend to isolate herself
11. Religious about "good and bad" foods
Binge-Eating Disorder
Someone with Binge Eating Disorder may have these signs:
1. Recurrent binge-eating episodes during which a person feels a loss of control over his or
her eating
2. Weight gain to the point of obesity
3. Depression due to guilt, shame and distress over behavior
4. Always on a diet or looking for a diet
5. Preoccupied with food, meals and food preparation
6. Angry and irritable when "separated from food"
7. Tend to isolate and become anti social
8. Eat small amounts of food in public settings and then binge in secret
9. Very low self image
10. Not in touch with the needs of their own bodies
If you think that you or a loved one may be suffering from an Eating Disorder, don't despair,
there is hope: Eating Disorders are treatable.
However:
I would advise you to get in contact with a Physician or Counselor as soon as possible, especially if this eating
disorder has been going on for a while.
